Federal NC redistricting lawsuits officially scheduled for June 2025 trial

Two federal lawsuits challenging North Carolina’s congressional and legislative election maps will head to trial in June 2025 in Winston-Salem. Neither case will affect this year’s elections. The US District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina issued a notice Thursday announcing a June 16, 2025, bench trial date for Williams v. Hall and North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP v. Berger.

Appeals Court rules for NC board in licensing dispute with drone operator

The 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed a ruling favoring a  North Carolina government board in its licensing dispute with a drone-operating company. Appellate judges agreed that the board did not violate the plaintiffs' constitutional rights.

NC fishing charters could lose 30% of business under Biden admin whale rule

The North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW) Vessel Strike Reduction Rule, proposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), would restrict vessels greater than or equal to 35 feet (10.7 m) and less than 65 feet (19.8 m) in length to 10 knots (roughly 11 mph) along much of the Eastern Seaboard during the whales’ migration and calving season, from November to May.

Foxx introduces bill that would require more oversight to NGOs

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, R-NC-05, has introduced legislation that would require all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that apply for a federal grant to certify that they have not, will not, engage in acts related to the smuggling and transportation of illegal aliens into the United States.

Federal judge transfers 30-day voter residency challenge, takes no action on injunction

A federal judge has accepted state lawmakers’ request to transfer a lawsuit challenging North Carolina’s 30-day residency requirement for voters. At the same time, the judge took no action on plaintiffs’ request for an injunction blocking the requirement.
