East Carolina University Board of Trustees adopts free speech resolution

The East Carolina University Board of Trustees voted unanimously this month to adopt a “Resolution on the Affirmation of Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech.” The resolution is based on the UNC Board of Trustee report and the 1967 Kalven Committee Report from The University of Chicago.

Plaintiffs, NC Justice Department object to Leandro motions from controller, legislative leaders

Plaintiffs in North Carolina’s long-running Leandro education funding lawsuit urge the state Supreme Court to reject two recent motions in the case. The N.C. Justice Department also opposes the motions from state legislative leaders and the controller’s office. Both motions ask the state’s highest court to address unresolved Leandro issues.

Student in Charlotte-Mecklenburg sex assault lawsuit appeals to 4th Circuit

Almost a month after a jury ruled against her, a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg student is appealing her case to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The student claims the city and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools mishandled her report of a sexual assault near Myers Park High School in 2015.

Education bill would require Computer Science and make Earth Science an elective

A measure to require students to take a computer science course prior to graduating high school passed through the North Carolina House Education Committee Feb. 14. The committee also passed a bill to revamp the governance structure of three schools for deaf and blind students, a bill vetoed by Gov. Cooper in 2022.

State legislative leaders and the state controller are asking the N.C. Supreme Court to block a forced money transfer tied to the long-running Leandro education funding case. In separate motions filed Wednesday, Controller Nels Roseland and top lawmakers asked the high court to restore a previous order from the N.C. Court of Appeals.
